By Rudy Chong - Ezineartilces

Then they end up throwing the chairs and sofa out and buying new ones. However, it is possible to save your favorite old furniture by recovering chairs and sofas yourself. You will need some upholstery tacks or a good sturdy stapler a hammer, pliers, and a sewing machine that can handle heavy materials. You may also need some strong sewing cord, heavy fabric and some curved upholstery needles for this task.

All you will need to do is take the old chair or sofa and remove the preexisting covers and replace the foam rubber cushions. This is easily, done by carefully removing the covering. Start by turning the chair or sofa over on its side then use a screwdriver and a pair of pliers to pull out the staples or tacks that hold the old covering on the wooden frame.

You are trying to remove the cover without tearing it so you can use it as a pattern for the new one you will put on. Once you have the old covering removed then you will measure the cover and write down all the pieces and their measurements. You will use a seam ripper and take these pieces apart. Then you will know what every thing goes to when you start putting them back together.

You can find a good heavy material at a local fabric store and find it in a new color or pattern that you wish the chairs and sofa to look like. When you find the right material then return home. Lay the old pieces you have for patterns on the new fabric and pin them to the new material. Cut the pieces out and then simply sew the pieces back together the way you took the old ones apart.
